Wooden pestles were widely used in rural kitchens throughout France and the US during the 17th thru 20th century. Commonly used for crushing herbs, nuts, garlic, spices, and preserving foods before mechanical tools existed. Today they make great styling objects around the kitchen! Each one varies.
